The Washington Wizards' Gilbert Arenas has been suspended indefinitely by NBA commissioner David Stern for bringing firearms into the Verizon Center reducing the likelihood of the Wizards being picked as winning NBA picks in the near future. See our follow-up blog post for more commentary on this situation and part of the reason this type of situation comes about at this time of the year. The original story, it turns out, was a far cry from the current description of what actually happened.

Over two weeks ago reports surfaced that Gilbert Arenas brought firearms into his Verizon Center Locker. Gilbert explained that the guns were not loaded and his intention was simply to get the weapons out of his house because his wife had just had a baby and he no longer wanted firearms in the house. At the time, speculation was that the incident sounded harmless enough and would probably blow over, it even painted Gilbert Arenas as a responsible father. Gilbert Arenas has already got a reputation of missing too many games and he certainly doesn't need to start missing more games due to his own foolishness. At first, his explanation, along with his action of asking team security to dispose of the guns through proper police procedures could well have ended the incident.

Unfortunately for Arenas, the Wizards NBA Picks fans and the rest of the team, Gilbert Arenas decided to make a joke about the whole thing at the same time that more serious reports surfaced about the original incident. He playfully gunned down his team members after the Wizards recent win in Philadelphia. His team members laughed but David Stern did not. In effect, Arenas pointed his play gun at himself and it fired a real bullet. Stern suspended Arenas indefinitely without pay. The Wizards supported the decision and have publicly denounced Gilbert's behavior.

Arenas has now publicly apologized for his behavior. Gilbert Arenas released the following statement: "While I never intended any harm or disrespect to the NBA or anyone else, my gun possession at the Verizon Center and my attempts at humor showed terrible judgment," he said. "I take full responsibility for my conduct." The further accounts of this incident accuse Arenas of actually loading at least one of the weapons in the presence of other team members and other questionable actions but these are not yet substantiated. Arenas' mia copa is likely too little and too late at this point and there is a very good chance he will have most of the rest of the season to think it over.
